Ruelle des Fortifications

Gaspard-Joseph Chaussegros de Léry, Chief Engineer of New France, designed and oversaw the plans for Montréal’s defensive systems in the 18th century. Between 1687 and 1689, a wooden palisade was raised around the budding city. Stone ramparts were built from 1717 to 1744.

A symbol of authority and security, the fortifications of Montréal were built to be plainly visible to potential attackers. After its adoption in 1801, the Act for the Dismantling of Fortifications ordered the demolition of these imposing structures between 1804 and 1817. The city was thus unimpeded as it grew into surrounding communities and along the river.

Today, a segment of La Ruelle des fortifications is accessible from the World Trade Centre Montréal, inaugurated in 1992. Covered by an immense skylight, La Ruelle des fortifications is a vast, luminous atrium which can host events welcoming 350 to 800 people.

Les Voûtes

The historic Nordheimer building houses all of our meeting rooms and hides in its foundation two magnificent stone vaults dating from the middle of the 18th century. These perfectly restored vaults are the ideal places to hold receptions and private ceremonies. Les Voûtes, the most spacious of the two rooms, is great for luncheons and dinners.

You will be dazzled by Les Voûtes, deep below the Nordheimer, the only heritage building in the World Trade Centre Montréal to have been restored to its original state. The building includes three 36-metre caverns, two of which were constructed in 1820 under the original wooden structures that appeared after the demolition of the fortifications. The third was excavated in 1845, between the two originals, below the stone edifice which now covers the entire.
